I’m a private room. I’m great for a couple or two friends. I have two beds that can be separated and a small desk. I have a shower and a sink. The toilet is in the hall, just 2 meters from the room. I’m located on the first floor of my boutique hostel. If you book me for sure you will love the old maps on my wall. I can understand you might want a map too, so I collected a couple extra for sale. They are old maps of The Netherlands and the old Dutch colonies.
Hello I’m a VOC colony mapmaker. The Dutch East-India Company was given a monopoly in trade in (largely uncharted) Asia. To be as up to date as possible on shipping, the VOC governors authorized all merchants, skippers, and mates to share all written information about their journeys. As of 1619, all incoming information in the Republic was systematically processed in Amsterdam by specially contracted map makers, like me. The VOC also acquired a monopoly on the publication of these maps. It was not in their interest that the British competition would be able to profit from the information. However, this monopoly didn’t turn out to be very effective: the VOC’s knowledge found its way to the general public, though for example Willem Blaeu’s 1635 world atlas.
