De Heem

Hello I'm local

I’m a private room. I have a big bed, my own shower and sink. They couldn’t fit in a toilet, but don’t worry there’s one just outside my room. I have a street view from my window.

Hello I’m Jan Davidszoon de Heem. I was born in Utrecht and I’m one of the central figures of the Dutch baroque still life – inextricably connected with the Golden Age. I used all kind of different flowers, exotic or not, sometimes surrounded by insects such as butterflies and beetles. The symbolism in these paintings is most likely admiration for the creation, the butterfly a reminder of our mortality. I played an important role in the development of the ‘show off’ still-life, which flourished in the second half of the seventeenth century. In these still lifes you’ll find a display of gold and silver valuables, brought together in a composition with a theatrical, monumental character. Many of my works can be seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
